Along with other DHBs across the country we are reflecting, remembering and commemorating those who were impacted by the Whakaari / White Island tragedy.
On 9 December 2019, medical and support staff across New Zealand scrambled to respond to the emergency that unfolded after the devastating eruption on Whakaari White Island.
Hutt Valley staff and staff from DHBs across the country, cared for patients and their families affected by this tragedy—today, we want to acknowledge their efforts’. What they undertook was accomplished with exceptional professionalism, compassion, and skilled, attentive care under a significant amount of pressure.
Many of the survivors are still recovering from the injuries and trauma received.
Our thoughts today are with the friends and whānau of those who were lost.
We are also thinking of the survivors and their whānau whose lives were significantly impacted by this event.
For our staff and colleagues across the country involved in the response, thank you for what you do each and every day.
