Thank you to everyone who sent in nominations for the 2019 Hutt Valley Matariki Achieving Excellence in Maori Health Awards.
We have been delighted with the large response, and will be contacting the nominees.
Nominations have now closed. They were previously open to Kaupapa Māori providers, primary care organisations, GP practices, NGOs and Hutt Valley DHB employees and contractors who provide services to the Hutt Valley DHB population to improve Māori health outcomes.
Our annual Matariki Achieving Excellence in Maori Health Awards are one of the ways we will recognise and celebrate the dedication of our people and inspire others by sharing their work.
The Hutt Valley Matariki Awards logo was designed by Naenae College art teacher Tamariki Ferguson.
The circle represents a womb, and the koru within it shows the nurturing of whānau. The line up the middle represents the umbilical chord.
Rising on each side are the po. The lines are short and growing in steps, as people too are encouraged to keep striving up for excellence.
Above is the Matariki star cluster. From early June, before sunrise, look to the north-east horizon. Find the constellation Tautoru, or Orion’s belt sometimes called The Pot. Trace a line northwards from the three stars of Tautoru. Look for a faint sparkle of tiny dots, about the same width as Tautoru is long. This is the Matariki star cluster.
The award categories are:
Tupu-ā-nuku – Excellence in Māori health leadership (tuakana/teina). This award demonstrates the aspects of a tuakana/teina leadership style.
Tupu-ā-rangi – Excellence in Māori health innovation. This award demonstrates an innovative approach to service delivery.
Waipunarangi – Excellence in Māori health analytics. This award demonstrates transformative processes for data capture and analysis.
Waitī & Waitā – Excellence in Māori health integration. This award demonstrates integration of multiple providers into service delivery.
Ururangi – Mauri ora (living our values). This award demonstrates tino rangatiratanga.
Matariki – Te Mana Whakahaere (Supreme award). This award demonstrates excellence across Te Ao Māori & Te Ao Hurihuri.

•Finalists will be announced end of June 2019
•The winners will be revealed at an awards evening at the Ricoh Sports Centre in Avalon, Lower Hutt, from 6pm to 8.30pm on July 4 2019.
